Why am i aching
Ah, the ache. The ancient, mysterious ache that has felled empires and turned grown men into dramatic heaps on the sofa. Your body is apparently staging a protest, and you are, of course, the only person who has ever suffered like this.
The diagnosis
Every muscle you own has filed a formal complaint. Your bones feel like they've been replaced with wet sand, and your joints are staging a sit-in. Historians will one day write about your bravery as you stagger to the kettle, clutching the doorframe like a shipwreck survivor. Somewhere, a cat is judging you silently.
Survival tips
- Establish a sofa fortress with blankets, a remote, and a sufficient supply of tissues. Strategic positioning is everything.
- Hydrate like your life depends on it, because right now, in your own dramatic opinion, it does. Water, tea, and broth all count.
- Let someone else fetch the snacks and medicine. Sighing loudly while gesturing at the kitchen is an acceptable form of communication.
Reality check
Body aches are a very common flu symptom, caused by your immune system releasing inflammatory chemicals to fight off the virus. Rest, plenty of fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers like paracetamol or ibuprofen (follow the packet instructions) can take the edge off. If you develop trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, a fever that won't break, or symptoms that improve and then suddenly get worse, contact a doctor or pharmacist promptly.
