What if the sneezes make you pee your pants

The panel says

Ah, the sneeze-induced puddle. Nothing says 'I am a fearless warrior of the common cold' like a sudden, unplanned bladder event during a sneeze. Clearly, your body has decided to make this flu a full-contact sport.

The diagnosis

Your immune system has declared war, and your bladder has surrendered without a fight. Historians will someday write about the Great Sneeze Incident of this winter, and you will be remembered as its reluctant hero. Even the tissue box is looking at you with pity. Your dignity has taken a direct hit, but the sofa is still there to comfort you.

Survival tips

  • Stock up on spare underwear and dark trousers now, before the next sneeze ambushes you in the supermarket queue.
  • When you feel a sneeze coming, sit down, cross your legs, and brace yourself like you are defending the last biscuit in the tin.
  • Keep a towel on the sofa and an emergency change of clothes in the car. Preparation is the best defence against both germs and embarrassment.

Reality check

A bad cold can briefly weaken your pelvic floor because of the violent coughing and sneezing, so this often settles once you recover. If it keeps happening after the flu clears, or you notice it when you cough, laugh, or lift things, book a GP appointment, since it could be something that needs a proper check-up. Gentle pelvic floor exercises can help in the meantime, and they are far less embarrassing than explaining a wet patch to a stranger.

Important disclaimer

Please do not tough this one out like it is a bad film night. If the leaks continue, or you have pain, blood, fever, or trouble peeing, see a doctor rather than waiting for the sofa to fix it. And a huge thank you to whoever is making the tea, changing the bedsheets, and pretending not to notice. You are very lucky to have them, and they deserve a medal, or at least a takeaway.
